Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:03, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Database reports/Self-categorized categories
[edit]I believe that the categories in Commons:Database reports/Self-categorized categories are mostly cleaned out and properly categorised. Would it be possible to generate a new list ?
Would it be possible to generate such a list on a regular base or on a special page ? Self-categories are a typical beginner error, and as with non categorised categories, the sooner we can help beginners, the less their errors are multiplied.
As a general rule, it would be interesting to have those database files refreshed once a month or so. --Foroa (talk) 09:26, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
- I'm manually re-running the report now. It should be possible to get a bot to do the updating regularly.... --MZMcBride (talk) 15:08, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Iw report
[edit]Hi MZMcBride,
I noticed you started updating the database reports again. Good news! I was wondering if you would interested in adding a few on interwikis. To start, maybe they could be limited to subcategories of Category:Ships by name. If it works, we could try them for Category:People by name and more. Reports I thought could help:
- List of subcategories of Ships by name without interwikis, but an article at en_wiki with the same title (ideally not a disambiguation page there).
- List of subcategories of Ships by name with an interwiki to en_wiki and more interwikis at en_wiki than here
Cheers. -- Docu at 06:21, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Page count
[edit]Hi MZMcBride,
You might want to fine tune Page_count_by_namespace by taking in account Category redirects (sample). If you combine the functions I added with "subst:" the result could be written by the bot directly. -- Docu at 11:09, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

Commons:Database reports/Self-categorized categories
[edit]Thank you for Commons:Database reports/Self-categorized categories. A regular update (once or twice per month) would allow us to timely spot people that basically make only completely isolated self-categorised categories. --Foroa (talk) 10:09, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi MZMcBride,
There are a series of "/overlay.kml" "subpages" in file namespace that don't have any file associated with it. These are mostly included in Category:Geocoding overlays. It would be helpful if these were excluded from the report or if there was an easy way to sort the report to find other pages. -- Docu at 04:16, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
Concerning Commons:Database reports/File description pages without an associated file, would it be possible to exclude from the list:
- overlay files such as File:Albertstadt Map 1895.jpg/overlay.kml
- protected file names belonging to Category:Commons prohibited file names such as File:File.jpg
Thank you. --Foroa (talk) 07:40, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Hello,
Would it be possible for BernsteinBot to compile more data ? At present the "categorized" column on, for example, this page only provides a boolean "categorized" YES/NO parameter. Would it be possible to retrieve the number of added categories and to calculate the percentage of files with 2 or more categories, with 3 or more categories, etc... ? Especially if the number of categories is only one, I consider that the job is not finished. Files should have at least 2 or 3 categories, in most cases. It would be good to have a way to find the files with only one category, so that people can quickly go to those files to finish the job. Teofilo (talk) 12:58, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

This page is becoming unwieldy due to length. Could you have the bot put rows that are 100% complete in a separate table that is collapsed by default below the main table (but leaving the totals row in the main table, representing the statistics for everything)? BernsteinBot vs. Documerica
[edit]Have you noticed the problems with commons:National Archives and Records Administration/Categorize/US National Archives series: DOCUMERICA: The Environmental Protection Agency's Program to Photographically Document Subjects of Environmental Concern, compiled 1972 - 1977? I'm kind of guessing it's empty because the page was getting too big; but I haven't found where it says that.
Also, when I look at the last version of the page with content (from September!), I see less than a third of the files listed on the Categorize page. You're gonna need a bigger integer! (Actually, you shouldn't, which is confusing.) -- Ken g6 (talk) 23:51, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Some strange Bot actions
[edit]Please have a look at the BernsteinBot actions at Commons:Database reports/Largely duplicative file names. The strange behaviour started on February 13, 2012 - maybe related to the new Mediawiki software? - Yes. This report relies on a very large query which is now being killed when it runs. I need to split the query into smaller pieces so that it won't be killed. I'll try to take a look at this soon. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:35, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

- Oh, sorry, didn't realize {{SVG}} was a redirect to {{Convert to SVG}}. So you want file description pages that call that template that are SVGs, as you said in the original request. Here's the report: <https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?oldid=72080244>. This is based on page title, not based on MIME type, though. --MZMcBride (talk) 01:06, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
- SVGs The problem is that a file which is itself in Scalable Vector Graphics could be tagged with {{SVG}} (or {{Convert to SVG}} as the case may be) even though that's nonsense. I found out by accidentally doing so myself. Clearly, requesting conversion to vector graphics of a vector image is a bad idea, so I was wondering if there was some way to identify these unnecessary tags. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 08:44, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Request Empty redirects
[edit]Many files are renamed and then deleted later because of various reasons. Commons delinker removes the file name in the redirect, so several file per day remain as an empty redirect, such as File:MadSeule.jpg. Would it be possible to generate a list of such files once or twice per week ? Thank you. --Foroa (talk) 08:02, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
- Why on Earth is CommonsDelinker making edits such as this? That's a bug in the bot. --MZMcBride (talk) 08:29, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
- Posted about this here. This isn't to say that a database report isn't needed, but the underlying issue here is that CommonsDelinker is engaging in very strange (and inexplicable) behavior. --MZMcBride (talk) 08:35, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
- You say it's a bug. Then you have to say what the expected behavior is. Deleting the redirect? Doing nothing so it shows up in broken redirects? -- RE rillke questions? 08:37, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
- The bug is that CommonsDelinker is making edits that intentionally break the page (changing valid redirect syntax into invalid redirect syntax) without adding any value (now page is completely broken, before the page was a proper redirect, albeit to a non-existent page). The bot could tag the pages for deletion, but leaving the pages alone (to be listed at a "Broken redirects" report) seems sanest. I haven't investigated this problem very closely, but the current behavior is almost certainly wrong here. That's the bug and that's what I'm reporting. --MZMcBride (talk) 08:42, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
- Right. Problem is that SieBot is not really maintained, so I try to find a work around. Indeed, the file should be deleted and delinked in such cases so that the using wikipedia pages don't display rubbish. This is a relatively recent problem since file redirects (and renaming) works. This could indeed be included in Commons:Database reports/Broken redirects and might possibly include other syntactical problems. Such files (all ?) can be found in Special:UncategorizedFiles, but there are so many files and strange cases there for reasons that I don't manage to understand, so clearing of it takes ages, so really when I have nothing important to do. --Foroa (talk) 08:58, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

- MZMcBride, For last 3 years we are asking for a change to your File description pages without an associated file query: see here or here. Any chance you can reply to the requests? If there is a good reason not to fix that issue than tell us about it, but just ignoring repeated requests seems to be rude. --Jarekt (talk) 14:48, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Jarekt. Sorry for the slow responses, I'm not very active on Wikimedia Commons. When I do visit, it's usually to upload a photo and run away.
- I think someone asked me to set up database reports here years ago, so I did so one day, but it's never been very well supported. Database reports need a lot of love. I imagine all of the database reports will break soon when the Toolserver dies. :-( I'm sure the issue you're describing with the Commons:Database reports/File description pages without an associated file can be easily fixed, but I probably won't have the inclination. The source code is at <https://github.com/mzmcbride/database-reports> if you can help out. --MZMcBride (talk) 23:24, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
- MZMcBride, Thanks for your replay. Some of those reports are quite important for a lot of basic maintenance, but I can understand how you feel. I stop programing in R about 10 years ago, but until about 4 years ago I was still trying to find time to maintain some of the tools I wrote, which was quite time consuming, because to do even the smallest change I had to recreate the whole complicated compiling environment. I agree that we should find someone to transfer those tools to who can provide a lot of love. Thanks for your work on that. --Jarekt (talk) 03:21, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

- Agreed. --MZMcBride (talk) 02:55, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

Letter G
[edit]Hello.Do you have an explanation for the emergence of categories
- Category:Letter G on automobiles
- Category:Letter G on aircraft
- Category:Letter G on vehicle registration plates
- Category:Letter G on objects
in Commons:Database reports/Self-categorized categories although their contents are true? ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2 (talk) 07:54, 31 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hi. Those categories are currently self-categorized. The report is correct. For example, if you look at the bottom of Category:Letter G on aircraft, you can see that the category is self-categorized within Category:Letter G on aircraft. --MZMcBride (talk) 00:07, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
- I know that "The report is correct".But why is there this error in these categories, even though they do not exist in the rest of the categories that consist of the same content?! ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2 (talk) 07:40, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

BernsteinBot does not recognize IP addresses correctly
[edit]The bot treats user names consisting only of (many) digits as IP addresses – see the first entry on Special:PermanentLink/641919051. --ToughDonk (talk) 06:34, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
