Question

[edit]

Hi. Since your someone who regularly researches FOP can you do me a favor and tell me what you think about the wording in Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Bangladesh#Freedom of panorama? Maybe it's just me, but I can't make heads or tails out of it for some reason or if 2d artwork qualifies for FOP there. I assume not since the guideline says Bangladeshi law is modelled on the UK and 2D "graphic works" aren't covered by FOP there but it's not really clear from the wording of the section if that's the case or not. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 12:05, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Adamant1 the old Bangladeshi law is based upon the British copyright model, and its FoP had resemblance to the British FoP. However this is moot, considering that Bangladesh passed a new copyright law in 2023 (which I posted on "Village Pump/Copyright"). This new law seems concerning as it did away with British-inspired fair dealing exceptions (including FoP), and replaced those with a very limited list of exceptions based on the U.S. fair use model, and we all know that any copyright law that wants to follow U.S. copyright model does not have any FoP of any sort, like the one of Sri Lanka. Because only Bengali text exists (no reliable English translation text is available online, be it official or unofficial), I cannot check if FoP still exists in the 2023 copyright law of Bangladesh. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 12:11, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hhhhmm, makes sense. It's unfortunate there's no English translation of the new law since people are uploading a ton of 2D artwork in the meantime. I don't think we should just allow people upload whatever images they want to because there's no English translation of the law. But then I don't want to do mass DRs for artwork that might be PD either. So I'm not really sure what to do about it. --Adamant1 (talk) 23:38, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Adamant1 I'd rather wait for an English translation (even unofficial) rather than making drastic revisions to COM:CRT/Bangladesh page. It must also be determined if the more restrictive law is retroactive or not. I already pinged few Bengali users in the VPC thread for them to read and translate the Bengali text for us (but it seems they are busy, perhaps[?]). JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 23:41, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps you may want to comment on the VPC thread concerning Bangladesh. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 23:45, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just to be clear I'm not planning on doing anything about it at this point. It would suck for people to upload images of a bunch of artwork from there if it turns out that it's not covered by FOP though. So hopefully someone who speaks the language can translate the law into English at some point. Otherwise the status in the guideline should just be changed to "unknown." Or at least clarified somehow. I'm not going to nominate anything for deletion or change the guideline for now though. --Adamant1 (talk) 01:12, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Spam

[edit]

Hi, Won't the spam be still parsed by search engines with your edit? Yann (talk) 08:47, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Yann perhaps, but removing it may cause impression to some that Mrb Rafi was referring to my comment. An optimal solution may be removing the spam as well as his remark on the spam altogether, though I would want to have Mrb Rafi's comment if he agrees the spam as well as his remark be removed altogether. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 08:49, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think that would be better. Yann (talk) 09:10, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
yes yes, feel free to remove my comment with the spam text. nvm -- Mrb Rafi (talk) 15:48, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done removing, see this. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 16:31, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! All files in this category is NoFoP Ukraine. Микола Василечко (talk) 11:45, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Микола Василечко feel free to nominate those images of sculptures by yourself. I can't execute nominations as of the moment due to health reasons. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 12:19, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Libya Photos

[edit]

Hi, I noticed you deleted a lot of my Libya photos for fear of breach of Freedom of Panorama laws. Please note that Libyan law is not explicit on the photographic representation of buildings in public spaces. In addition, the use of such photographs for encyclopedic use is permitted. Can we re-open the discussion and reinstate the photographs, potentially under a reworded tag? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaw101ie (talk • contribs) 17:29, 7 October 2024‎  (UTC+8)

@Jaw101ie: first and foremost, kindly sign in – in a proper manner – your comment/s using four tildes (~~~~).
And regarding your replies:
  • To be clear, I nominated your images, but not deleted as I don't have administrator rights.
  • Regarding Libyan Freedom of Panorama, no mention of FoP means there is no legal right to reproduce buildings and monuments for commercial or lucrative purposes, like distribution on the Internet. It is simple. For a country to have FoP, it has to be mentioned in the copyright law, like the Section 62 of the United Kingdom copyright law and the first paragraph of Article 40 of the copyright law of Türkiye. You may want to look at the FoP provisions of UK and Türkiye. The Libyan copyright law, essentially outdated and not fit for the Internet age, does not provide any FoP of any sort, so we cannot host images of copyrighted buildings and monuments from that country.
  • Wikimedia Commons is different from Wikipedias (like English Wikipedia, Tagalog Wikipedia, Mandarin Chinese Wikipedia, Arabic Wikipedia and others). While several Wikipedias can host images containing copyrighted works from other countries courtesy of fair use and other local exemption policies (like English Wikipedians' consensus in 2012 to only respect U.S. laws and not laws of other countries to be able to locally host copyrighted buildings [but not monuments] from Libya and other no-FoP countries using U.S. law), Wikimedia Commons does not accept images that cannot be reused in commercial media like uses in postcards, travel websites, mobile/web apps (like in online games), calendar designs, and advertising. See COM:Licensing#Acceptable licenses. In fact, {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} and other permitted licenses are inherently commercial. Wikimedia Commons does not accept non-commercial media: {{Noncommercial}} only redirects to speedy-deletion template.
  • A change in the Libyan copyright law is strongly urged, similar to the initiative made by Belgian Wikimedians in 2016, to enable images of modern buildings and monuments of Libya to be hosted on Wikimedia Commons, as well as in Flickr, Unsplash, Getty Images and other media archive and stock image sites, without the need of permissions from architects and sculptors of the said works or the authors' heirs.

Thanks so much, can you please guide me which Copyright tag to use to download my images (that contain completed buildings) on Wikipedia (rather than Wikimedia).
Jaw101ie (talk) 13:16, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaw101ie if you will upload your images locally on English Wikipedia, then perhaps use the usual w:en:WP:Upload method. The recommended tag is w:en:Template:FoP-USonly, though I'm not sure if it exists as among the dropdown or pop-up options in the licensing field of the upload forms; you can perhaps add the tag later on after you uploaded your image file (personally, I haven't yet uploaded local images of Philippine buildings on enwiki, but I would instead wait for the Philippine copyright law to be reformed, perhaps a year later or two, due to seemingly-short period of time remaining for the w:en:19th Congress of the Philippines before the mid-term elections here next year, and the four pending bills here containing Freedom of Panorama exception remained pending; what I am trying to say is that I haven't yet experimented on uploading a local image of an unfree public building of the Philippines on enwiki, so you may need some guidance from other users there; I may recommend you to ask AntiCompositeNumber, P199 or Marchjuly for further help).
Note that this advice is only for enwiki (English Wikipedia). If you work for articles on Arabic Wikipedia, I don't know if arwiki allows local uploads of fair use content or not.
Also, in the case of enwiki, only architecture (buildings) are allowed, since the U.S. FoP only covers commercial exploitations of buildings without architects' permissions. The U.S. law does not provide identical exception to other public art like monuments still under sculptors' copyright. See thousands of deleted images of monuments from around 100 no-FoP-for-monuments countries at my userspace page on enwiki. In short, do not upload images of Libyan monuments and murals on enwiki. Only buildings. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 13:53, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Adding/editing subcategory categories from parent category page

[edit]

Hello. Is there a feature, script, or gadget that could be able to display and edit the categories of a category in the categories page? For example, in Category:Antipolo Cathedral, without having to tediously open all its subcategory pages, I would want to directly edit the (and hopefully, add new) categories of all its subcategories (Exterior of Antipolo Cathedral, Interior, etc.). I was thinking HotCat or something similar could do this. Sanglahi86 (talk) 09:01, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sanglahi86 the closest would be Cat-a-lot, but in cases where you would want to add new categories to or recategorize the subcategories in the same manner as recategorizing files. All you need to do is go to the preference link of the gadget window, then when the popup appears check the "Allow categorising pages (including categories) that are not files." Then OK, and it is up to your decision if you want to save the configuration temporarily or permanently ("publicly visible"). You can now select the subcategories that you would want to be recategorized or add new categories. The gadget does not have the ability to allow you edit the wikitext content of the subcategories, however. I dunno if "AWB" also works here, ask other users (I suggest Help:Help desk) for possible other tools if you don't want Cat-a-lot (especially since it is being under "rate limit" sanction as its ultra-speed performance reportedly brought Wikimedia's servers down multiple times already, causing downtime for multiple Wikimedia platforms/sites, violating API policy). JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 09:17, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, thanks for the extremely useful info. It would make refining categories much easier. I think I am fine with Cat-a-lot for now; I might ask Help desk later if I do get annoyed with its limited speed. Thanks again. Sanglahi86 (talk) 09:34, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sanglahi86 welcome. Feel free to ask me for more help, and I'll respond based on my knowledge and experience here. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 09:39, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
