Problems with logging in to pywikibot

Hi. I am trying to login to accounts using python pwb.py login, but typing my password gives the error
ERROR: Username 'C1MM' does not have read permissions on commons:commons.

>br> What is the reason behind this? For reference, typing the exact same password (or copying/pasting it) allows me to log in to my wikimedia account with no problem in Firefox, so it seems to be a pywikibot specific problem. C1MM (talk) 03:57, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

how to upload an educational manual written by a civil association

We wrote a 60-page manual and we wanted to upload it to Wikipedia so everyone can see and read it. How do you upload it and what are the limitations that exist? Fertilizar Asosiación Civil (talk) 13:07, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

@Fertilizar Asosiación Civil:
  1. Are you saying you want to upload it to Wikipedia in some language (not our issue here at Commons) or to Wikimedia Commons (this site)?
  2. Can you be more specific about what the manual covers and what your organization is?
  3. Accounts are supposed to be for individuals. Here at Commons, we allow account names like the one you have, but many of the Wikipedias will consider an organizational name like that inappropriate. You might want to consider changing the account to something like "Person's name (Fertilizar Asosiación Civil|)"

Yes worked Gamesplaystory2 (talk) 16:38, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

@Geohakkeri and Gamesplaystory2: Geohakkeri's advice here was actually kind of backwards, but I've fixed it: [1], [2]. Normally, the item-category link should go from Wikidata to Commons, not from Commons to Wikidata. Wikidata is the single nexus for tying everything together, rather than have the connections be scattered across the affected sites. - Jmabel ! talk 18:22, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

Uploading postcards and bank letterheads to Wikipedia Commons

I have scans of old documents and postcards. What is the legality of uploading these? The bank letterhead is for this bank: en:Bank of Dyersburg so I am inclined to think that it would be worth trying to upload. The same goes for the postcards. These are 1940's era. Might be too recent, but I thought I would ask. Krelorian1917 (talk) 18:29, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

I suppose they are from USA? So, you can find necessary information in Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/United_States. Ruslik (talk) 19:18, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
Yep, all printed in US. One might be German, I will double check to be sure. 209.35.178.118 19:23, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
Location of printing isn't the issue, it's location of publication. Pre-WWI, a lot of U.S. postcards used German printers. (Not so much after that, though, even in peacetime, so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree.)
Do they have copyright notices (assuming you can see both front and back of the postcard, and the whole of the document)? If not, then for anything from the U.S. before 1977, they are certainly in the public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 23:20, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

Are we allowed to use it just because it's on commons? Or do we need further evidence? Wikieditor662 (talk) 19:42, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

Are you asking whether we can trust that it is an accurate representation? No, we cannot. Are you asking whether it is legal to use? Yes, there is no apparent problem with the public domain status of this image, and stylistically it appears to be from roughly the date stated the 19th century. - Jmabel ! talk 22:20, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
I was asking if the portrait was a genuine one of Liszt and Beethoven, or if it was of something else. It appears from your answer that it is. However, why can we not trust that it is an accurate representation? Does that mean we shouldn't add it to articles? Apologies in advance for the confusion. Wikieditor662 (talk) 22:33, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
Well, it's pretty crudely drawn, anonymous so we don't have any real way to know if the person who drew it had ever actually seen either of them let alone seen this scene, from an era before photography so we presumably have nothing solid to vet it against, and well into the time when Beethoven was totally deaf so whatever might have transpired he couldn't really have heard Liszt's playing. File:Beethoven Waldmuller 1823.jpg is a better-attested picture of Beethoven around this time, looking very unlike this drawing.
Looking further into this, Liszt's own description of his one encounter with Beethoven does not suggest a room full of people, and was something he talked about only decades later. So the picture is presumably more or less a fantasia. - Jmabel ! talk 03:03, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for the in depth explanation. I guess I won't be using this portrait. Wikieditor662 (talk) 03:06, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
I'm guessing it's more of an artistic depiction, like File:Shakespeare's family circle.jpg, though more contemporary. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:54, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

Upload logo - with permission

I'm sorry if this has been asked previously, but I want to upload a picture of the logo, to the event/organization I'm writing about. I know the artists name, and have gotten permission to use it, in the light of said event. And the event allowed me to write about and use their info/pictures. So I wouldn't classify it as fair use, as I got permission. I am not the owner, but it's still not free use. How do I correctly write that in? ZleepyBeazzt (talk) 11:35, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

@ZleepyBeazzt: Essentially same question as the one above. If the permission isn’t available, say, on a public website, it should be provided to us by email through the VRT system. But please notice that the permission must qualify as a free license; specifically, a {{Wikipediaonly}} license isn’t free enough. --Geohakkeri (talk) 12:52, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

Delete a redirect page?

Hi, yesterday I uploaded a file under an incorrect title, now kindly corrected by a relevant person following a "rename request" - old/incorrect name was at File:St Mary's College-1.jpg, new one is at File:St Mary's Convent-1.jpg. Currently this file is used only on a single Wikipedia page (at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lismore,_New_South_Wales) plus my own user page. I note that as part of the rename process, either the renamer or the software has created a redirect page on Commons from the old filename to the new one, see https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:St_Mary%27s_College-1.jpg&redirect=no ... I am thinking that this is really just "noise" now since the usage under the original name was so brief, and perhaps serves no useful purpose in the longer term, so am wondering whether it should or could simply be deleted... also who can do this if it is indeed sensible.... Thanks in advance, Tony Rees Tony 1212 (talk) 19:45, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

File redirects should almost never be deleted. However, if there is a recently uploaded file with an obvious error in the file name, some flexibility is of course permitted. --Geohakkeri (talk) 11:04, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
@Geohakkeri So If I interpret this as permitting a deletion in the present case, can I do it, or does it need to be done by an admin? (not sure what is the process here...) Tony 1212 (talk) 18:24, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
You can tag the redirect page with {{SD|G2}} if you want it deleted. --Geohakkeri (talk) 18:28, 3 August 2024 (UTC)

Problem with a pdf file

Hi. I recently uploaded File:National Geographic, April 1921, Persia.pdf, but when I want to use CropTool to extract more files, the pages are not loaded. Also, the thumbnail of the pdf file is not shown and in the File history section, Dimensions of the file is "0 × 0". What's the problem? HeminKurdistan (talk) 04:36, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

@HeminKurdistan: I can't speak to the thumbnail issue, but CropTool has had all sorts of problems lately. It looks like someone may finally be taking it over.
You'd do better to report this at Commons talk:CropTool, and possibly to file a phabricator report. - Jmabel ! talk 04:46, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
Maybe it's Commons:Village_pump/Technical#Problems_with_PDF_Preview. Enhancing999 (talk) 13:46, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
HeminKurdistan: Go to the archive.org source page as indicated in the file. Then scroll down on the right side to find the "SINGLE PAGE PROCESSED JP2 ZIP" file. Having downloaded that, find the page you want and, because it is is JP2000 format that cannot be uploaded to here, save a copy of that page as a jpg or png file. Preferably do any cropping before saving. No need to try and extract images from a pdf for most archive.org material as then tend to give crappy images made from a lower quality pdf. The JP2000 files are of a much higher quality. Here are a couple of files I uploaded by this method and they often replace a crappy image, such as File:The History of Little Henry and His Bearer (1826).jpg, File:S 156 Abb 107 Telephonzentrale im IX. Bezirke, Berggasse.jpg and File:Dublin and Drogheda Railway map 1855.jpg. Is this useful for you? Ww2censor (talk) 15:59, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
@Ww2censor. Thanks, that's a really useful tip. The good point of working with CropTool was that it uploaded files automatically. HeminKurdistan (talk) 05:10, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

What is the policy on porn

I am someone who is actively trying to avoid porn sites but want to learn about sexuality in a safe way I am an adult so graphic content is fine with me I am just trying to avoid material that is explicit porn intended specifically to arouse sexual feelings non porn graphic sexual material is different i understand that thank you 172.59.72.132 03:13, 6 August 2024 (UTC)

Commons really has no "policy on porn" as such. Pornography is a widespread human activity, and we certainly consider coverage of it within our scope, as is coverage of other aspects of human sexuality. Policy COM:Nudity is basically about trying to strike a reasonable balance in this area; basically, our requirements for images around nudity and sexuality are a bit more stringent than in other areas, but not dramatically different.
I would say that if you are looking for material about sexuality that generally avoids tipping over into pornography, a collection of images isn't the best place to start. You'd do better to go to the English-language Wikipedia and start from en:Category:Human sexuality. Outside of Wikimedia Foundation projects, https://www.scarleteen.com, although aimed primarily at teens, is an absolutely excellent educational site on human sexuality that tries very hard to avoid being pornographic. The bulk of the site is liable to be as useful to an adult as to the teens who are seen as its primary audience. - Jmabel ! talk 04:59, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
Thank for the quick response and I appreciate the answer just to clarify so looking at wiki policy sexual content on wiki commons has to serve a purpose and can’t be for sexual arousal which is what porn is
i sincerely apologize about all the questions and thanks again 172.59.72.132 03:17, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
And sorry meant to clarify what mean by avoiding porn is viewing sexually explicit material that’s sole purpose is sexual arousal and from reading wiki commons just now it sound like you don’t allow sexual content that is porn in nature and that it has to have a educational purpose even if it sexualy graphic
sorry a lot have questions lol
i have ocd that causes me to question things and porn sites I stay away from 172.59.72.132 03:59, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

Move option missing

@Arjayay: I've noticed something similar as a filemover: the "Move and Replace" option has turned back into "Move". I think the "RenameLink" gadget is broken. Looking at Special:Gadgets this might be related to the warning "The following right does not exist: writeapi". That warning appears against RotateLink, and that gadget isn't working either. --bjh21 (talk) 11:05, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

@Arjayay I checked and it seems absent on files, but strangely not absent on categories. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 16:17, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
@Immanuelle: That's because you can directly rename categories, but not files (because you're not a filemover). So MediaWiki gives you a "Move" link for categories but not files. Usually, the RenameLink gadget would add a "Move" link for files that makes it easy for you to add the {{Rename}} template, but RenameLink got broken by a MediaWiki update and needs a bit of administrator attention. --bjh21 (talk) 16:41, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

How would I bring attention to a deletion request?

In the sea of deletion requests, it seems somewhat likely that you may not get a response for days, weeks or possibly even months. You may have to try to actively bring attention, and point to your own deletion request.

How would I do that, apart from the Discord server? (I don't want to go there because I don't go to the Discord server basically ever, so I would seem only self-serving by going there for this) Kxeon (talk) 20:22, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

We have a serious backlog in deletion requests. More admins and experienced users working on them would be good. Is there some particular reason some deletion request is urgent and needs speedy attention? If it's a copyright violation, it can be tagged {{Copyvio}}. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 20:34, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
Is this about Commons:Deletion requests/File:Emblem of Ambazonia.svg or something else? If that, it's been open less than a week, so it is not even eligible to be closed unless there were a clear, strong consensus, which there isn't. Permission to overwrite files uploaded from my old account.

Hi, until 2020 I edited and uploaded from User:The-, but I lost the login to my old account and was unable to recover it, so had to set up a new account. This means I am now unable to upload new versions of images I uploaded with my old account, without going through the "request permission" page. I am planning on making a series of updates to a group of dozens of images I uploaded with my old account, and it will be very laborious to go through the requesting permission page for every single one of these images. I don't know if it is within the technical capabilities of the Commons permission system, but if it is, would it be possible to grant my new account blanket, indefinite permission to modify all images uploaded by User:The-, since we are the same person? Offa29 (talk) 01:29, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

@Offa29: I believe the only way to do that would be to grant you autopatrol rights. I'm pretty sure you qualify. Apply at Commons:Requests for rights. - Jmabel ! talk 03:47, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

@Ajaywrite: you are indeed a bit confused. This appears to be a copyrighted image for which no free license exists, so it doesn't belong on Commons unless the copyright-holder, presumably the photographer, grants such a license. Most of what is on the Internet (over 95%) is copyrighted material for which no free license is offered. You should not upload anything to Commons unless either (1) it is entirely your own work, and you are granting a license, (2) a specific free license is available, or (3) it is in the {{Public domain}} both in its home country and in the United States. - Jmabel ! talk 05:42, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

Attribution for existing files

I've just uploaded the file c:File:Друзья,_враги.jpg, which is a combination of the two existing files c:File:Безбожник у станка 164.jpg and c:File:Безбожник у станка 165.jpg. I'm unsure how to link this new file to the "other versions" section of these two existing files (other than manually). Is there a way to quickly interlink the three, and have I made any mistakes in attributions or uploading the new file? I'd like to repeat the process for a few other spreads. Pagliaccious (talk) 17:00, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

It's probably quicker to link the files "manually" than to look for a possibly non-existent automated thingie. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:36, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

How to upload free to use images without a clear license

The City of Vancouver archive contains a lot of images, and has ownership over a lot of the images. I'd like to upload some of these, such as this image of the S.S. Smokwa for use on English Wikipedia. However, there isn't a clear license. According to the city's website, in section 3.3, that for items owned by the city "the Archives grants the patron a non-exclusive license to use the reproductions without restriction as to the nature or purpose of the use." without actually specifying the details of said license, though other sections such as 3.7 make it seemingly analogous to a CC BY license.

So when uploading this, and other images owned by the city, to wikimedia commons, how do I handle the license? Emma0mb (talk) 20:54, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

@Emma0mb: You could use {{Attribution only license}}, but it might be worth creating a specific template for that site that mentions these specific terms from their website. - Jmabel ! talk 22:46, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
What would the best way to go about making a template be? Should I just copy the attribution only license, and what should it include? Emma0mb (talk) 22:57, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
@Emma0mb: There is a template for Vancouver Archives "Source" that can be used like {{VAN|CVA 447-8211.2}}, and for copyright/license permission I would use {{Attribution only license |text=City of Vancouver Archives, AM1506-S3-3-: CVA 447-8211.2, Photograph by Walter E. Frost}}. A specific template for the latter would be handy if any template-makers are reading this, though the file's notes specifically say Photographs to be credited as follows: Photograph by Walter E. Frost so not sure if the same formatting would cover other photographers in the archives. BTW the City of Vancouver Archives terms of use do suggest that their donation process includes transfer of copyright for items labeled "Rights holder City of Vancouver" and as you point out they do allow free use. @Thomassischke: Only the copyright-holder (Claudia Scherer, in this case) can grant a license; she could grant any license that Commons accepts. We usually recommend {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} or {{CC-BY-4.0}}. Either she needs to take an account and upload it herself, or she needs to post it with an indication of license on a web page (e.g. public-facing social media account) clearly under her control, or she needs to go through the COM:VRT process.
Also, please when uploading use a meaningful filename (e.g. "Claudia Scherer, 2024.jpg"), not an arbitrary string of letters and numbers. - Jmabel ! talk 22:53, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

@Gauhar2209: I have no idea what you mean here by "an after" but, no, most images on social networks are copyrighted and not free licensed. Why should we keep unused empty categories, instead of deleting them?

As far as I know, there are two extremely experienced registered users and they pointed out a problem about a user tagging the {{Empty page}} template to existing categories that are empty. I just browsed a bit and easily found many empty categories, but I can't see any sense of keeping them, so I'm wondering what good does it do us to not clean up useless categories or what are the benefits to Commons? We can assume the most extreme case: If empty categories to grow and we choose to sit (or say, nobody to clean up them), what will be the consequences for Commons?--125.230.83.100 08:44, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

The template isn't just for any empty category, just for some.
There isn't really a problem in creating an empty "Joe Biden in 2015" if already have categories for the other years in the decade. Enhancing999 (talk) 09:04, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
Most empty categories should be deleted, but I can think of at least two cases where they shouldn't be. One, as suggested by Enhancing999's remarks, is the rare empty category that forms part of a natural series or set where all or almost all of the others are populated. The other is a category that is clearly about to be used. For example if someone were to create a category for each day of a week-long conference a few days before it started, it would be silly to delete any empty categories there until at least few days after the conference is over. For a slightly less obvious example, for almost any category created in the last few days by an experienced user, we assume they plan to use the category in the near future if they haven't already. - Jmabel ! talk 20:06, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

Using a module

I would like to use data from Module:WL data in another page on Commons. What should I add behind {{#invoke:WL data| to retrieve a specific time for project W, country X, year Y and start/end Z? Romaine (talk) 10:50, 10 August 2024 (UTC)

How to add extra buttons to the toolbar above the edit field when replying?

When I type this message on the help desk (or elsewhere), above the edit field is a limited list of buttons (bold, italic, underlined, link, special characters, @). The ones I often use however aren't there (like nowiki, code) and I want to add them myself trough my .js. Does anyone have an example of (at least 2) added extra buttons to this toolbar? Romaine (talk) 10:56, 10 August 2024 (UTC)

Hmm... Code and nowiki are there normally, so the question might be how were they removed for you. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:51, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
I have now found the code one, where do you see the nowiki? But the main question remains, above the edit field when editing a page I have added various buttons. I like to add those too above the reply field. Romaine (talk) 14:00, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
In the "edittools" group of buttons. Oh, do you mean that you want to have only those two buttons, but you want to hide all the others? You may obtain more suggestions at Commons:Village pump/Technical. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:07, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
When I reply here, I use the reply function. With that function an edit field appears in the page. Above that edit field are some buttons, but I want to add some more. (The same thing I did above the edit field when normally editing a page.) I can't write from scratch new code, but if I have a good example, I can modify it for my own use. Romaine (talk) 14:13, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
Yes, the code and nowiki buttons, and many others, are already there, unless something was disabled in your preferences or they were removed when personalising your interface. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:21, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
If I try the reply function while being logged out, I see exactly the same. I will post something in the technical village pump. Romaine (talk) 14:39, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it may be more simple to find, maybe in your user preferences, how to activate the full default set of buttons above your edit field, than to write code in your js page to arrive at the same result, unless you want a personalised set of buttons to show only a few of the available buttons. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:41, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
As I already tried to indicate, I have the default set and I wish to add an extra personalised set of buttons. Romaine (talk) 14:43, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
Ok, then the mystery remains. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:47, 10 August 2024 (UTC)

@Ilanabe: Aren't they two different persons? Apparently, this category was created for the composer/conductor, Udi, although there are currently no files of this person in this category. See his official website [5]. See also the articles about Udi on the Wikipedias. You can create a separate category for the guitarist/singer, Ori, and transfer his photos there. Also, are you Moshik Brin? If not, you will need a VRT permission for File:אורי הרפז וקובי פז.jpg. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:38, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
There were two pages on Wikidata. A first page, Q2473089, was created in January 2013 apparently in connection with the German-language Wikipedia article about the conductor Udi. In May 2015, someone mixed into it a few things about the singer Ori, although the information on the page remained mostly about the conductor Udi. A second page, Q25487962, was created in July 2016, with very little information, apparently in connection with the Hebrew-language Wikipedia article about the singer Ori. Soon after that, in November 2016, someone copied the contents of the existing page Q2473089 into the newly created page Q25487962 and turned Q2473089 into a redirection to Q25487962. So, now, the single page Q25487962 is still mostly about the conductor Udi, with the information about him inherited from Q2473089, plus more information about him added since 2016, but the page has a title and a photo about the singer Ori. We can leave to the Wikidata people to look into that. But if they are two distinct persons, we should probably keep them distinct on Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:37, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
@Asclepias, thanks for notifying.
They are two people. The difference in Hebrew is only one letter "ר"/"ד".

I was trying to upload several photos related to the Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios Hollywood. These photos were taken last year, but I need help uploading them. There are questions about what it depicts in this photo, like the usage of non-free characters in this area. There are some photos that I will upload, so is it OK to upload the following:

  • Any image containing the Mario icon only on objects (like the coin block)?
  • Interiors of rides and attractions (including photos taken during the ride and the line queue)?
  • Images of vehicles inside the attraction?

I don't know if these photos are safe to upload to Wikimedia Commons. I usually avoid copyrighted objects on displays or blur them in order to upload to Wikimedia Commons. Evan0512 (talk) 23:49, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

See COM:De minimis for guidelines on the inclusion of copyrighted elements in a photo. Buildings are OK per COM:FOP USA but sculpture, artwork, characters would follow the de minimis guidelines. Rides seem to me like a grey area. Consigned (talk) 23:26, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

Mass category maintenance, and merging files

An American library has uploaded documents with over 100 pages as separate .jpg files, instead of something more sensible like .pdf or .tiff
Example of one booklet of statistics that should all be one file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?limit=500&offset=0&profile=default&search=35723ae1da43659e990b46ea4df41e19&title=Special:Search&ns0=1&ns6=1&ns12=1&ns14=1&ns100=1&ns106=1
Can we merge this, with a bot or something?
Alternatively, is there a way to easily mass-categorise based on search results? Or based on a query like "where file is in category_x and not in category_y, add category_z [and maybe some more category operations]"? Thank you. Komonzia (talk) 00:59, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

There's lots of this, usually via DPLA, because that is apparently how DPLA store these. User:Dominic may have some thoughts here.
For some of documents (e.g. a highly visual magazine or catalog, or the two sides of a postcard) the JPEGs are probably better than a PDF, but I completely agree that most long documents are better as PDFs. Still, I am much happier to be handling the material in Category:Helix (newspaper) as JPEGs than as PDFs, but that is because it really is worth curating page-by-page; e.g. it's given us pretty much all of our content for Category:Split-fount inking. - Jmabel ! talk 04:18, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
Looking at his user page, Dominic seems very involved. So assuming there is a good reason separate JPEGs were chosen: One way forward we've not mentioned yet, I guess, is to add each of the files exported (using the hexadecimal identifier like 35723ae1da43659e990b46ea4df41e19 in my example) to its own category. I wanted to add the document in my example to the Net migration category. If all the files of that document were in one category, then we could add just the category as a subcategory, instead. I could do that with a script, just never done it before. If a script or bot already exists for that activity, it would be cool. Komonzia (talk) 18:41, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
@Komonzia: The semi-automated Cat-a-lot is very good for this sort of thing. VisualFileChange can also be useful if you are more comfortable with that. Either can work on a search result. - Jmabel ! talk 02:28, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

Hi, I am interested in potentially uploading some historic Australian photographs, some published e.g. on postcards, some apparently unpublished, author unknown. They are mostly from the late 1890s into the early 1900s. I am a little confused as to which copyright situations apply here. At first I thought https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:PD-old-assumed would be applicable, for anything dating from 1903 and earlier. However I also found this: https://www.copyright.org.au/browse/book/ACC-Duration-of-Copyright-INFO023 (published 2024) which states:

"with effect from 1 January 2005, the duration of copyright for all published works including photographs was extended and made consistent – that is, life of the author/creator plus 70 years after the calendar year in which they died. See our fact sheet, Photography & Copyright. Due to changes to the copyright duration rules in 2005, copyright has already expired: • in a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work (other than a photograph) if it was published before 1 January 1955 and the creator also died before then • in a photograph, if it was made before 1 January 1955."

This seems to say, on one hand that copyright in (Australian) photographs is, life of the author/creator plus 70 years after the calendar year in which they died, and on the other, that all photographs taken before 1955 are out of copyright (these 2 statements seem to be a bit contradictory).

In any case, can you suggest whether I can legitimately upload copies of Australian photographs I do not own, but which either (1) pre-date 1904 (120-year rule), or (2) pre-date 1955 (per statement above), and if so, which licence attributions should be used? Thanks in advance - Tony Rees, Australia Tony 1212 (talk) 20:17, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

OK, found my answer here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/Australia ... looks like I can just use "PD-Australia" for photographs taken prior to 1955. Cheers - Tony Tony 1212 (talk) 22:08, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
I would appreciate some guidance regarding the appropriate PD-US tags that should also be used, though... Tony 1212 (talk) 22:30, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
Anything published anywhere before 1929 can use {{PD-US-expired}}. - Jmabel ! talk 02:31, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
Thanks... would that also apply to unpublished items as well? In this case historic photos from private collections, later donated to museums... maybe never formally published. Tony 1212 (talk) 03:54, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel From https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Hirtle_chart, I see that for "never published, never registered" works, PD-US-unpublished can be used for works without a known author, for works created before 1904 (i.e. 120 years before the current year). So I am thinking that unattributed, unpublished works (from Australia in the present instance) from 1904 onwards cannot be uploaded to Commons since they lack an appropriate tag for the US?? Just need to know what my cut-off date is here (some photos of interest may be before, some after that date). Regards Tony Tony 1212 (talk) 18:52, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
Sorry, didn't notice these were not all published. Yes, 120 year for unpublished, anonymous. - Jmabel ! talk 18:56, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
OK, thanks @Jmabel, I think all is clear now. A bit of a pain that PD in Australia cannot automatically extend to elsewhere in the world, though! Regards Tony Tony 1212 (talk) 19:26, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

How to upload photos from Russian Wikimedia Commons to English Wikipedia?

Hello! This is probably a ridiculous question, but I really want to upload a photo of Maxim Lazovsky to English Wikipedia, but I have never uploaded a photo before from Wikimedia Commons onto Wikipedia. Can you guide me in simple steps, such as for a new Wikipedian?

Any help would be appreciated

@Ramekin99: Why would you want to upload from Commons to en-wiki? Any image on Commons can be used on en-wiki exactly as if it had been uploaded to en-wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 02:33, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
Oh, wait: your header for this section says "Russian Wikimedia Commons". Could you give a URL of what you are talking about? As far as I know there is no such thing, just the Wikimedia Commons you are on, which is a multilingual project. - Jmabel ! talk 02:35, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
@Ramekin99: Do you want to use the Russian Wikipedia file Maxim Lazovsky.jpg on his English Wikipedia article?
If so, you would download that file and upload it to English Wikipedia as a non-free file if you believe it meets the image criteria for fair use.
(If you're talking about some other file that has a Commons-eligible license or is in the public domain, then you would upload that file to Wikimedia Commons. To be clear, "fair use" is not a Commons-eligible license). "free use" is not a Commons-eligible license
After you've uploaded the relevant file, you would add the image to the English Wikipedia article Maxim Lazovsky by adding the code [[File:name of the photo|thumb|Caption text]] in.
Pinging @Jmabel, in case I've misstated anything. Lovelano (talk) 20:18, 13 August 2024 (UTC)

It's not "silent" to vandalize images. Don't do that. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:25, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

Would it be possible to make the background of File:Yogo2783_Close_crop.JPG transparant? It is used as an icon and the others all have transparent backgrounds which looks better in dark mode. Thanks a lot! Polygnotus (talk) 06:43, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

Strictly speaking, a JPEG cannot have transparency, as it doesn't have an alpha channel to store this information. The only way to make this graphic have a transparency is to embed it in another format that can have transparency, such as PNG or TIFF (or even SVG!) and then remove the background. You can add {{Opaque}} to the file to request a transparent background. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:24, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. OK, that means it is time for me to go to sleep because I am talking nonsense. Polygnotus (talk) 09:15, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
It's hardly nonsense: your request makes complete sense, it's just that the file format doesn't allow for it, unlike almost all other common image formats. Even GIFs have transparency. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:15, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

Is this album cover PD?

The basic cover to this album is certainly {{PD-shape}} because it's just a couple of lines and a ring on a plain background, but there is some slight blurring that makes me wonder if this is enough to constitute a copyright-able image. I think not, since it seems like it's a pretty basic blur filter and not anything that involved the effort to make something distinct, but I want to run it by others before I upload it here. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:15, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

Which country is the album art from? I think this is below COM:TOO USA but it could be above others like COM:TOO UK. Consigned (talk) 17:32, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

Uploading SVG with unsafe CSS

Hello! I wanted to upload this 2015 map with the downloadable SVG, but I was prevented from doing so by Special:Upload due to "unsafe CSS in the style element of uploaded SVG file". Is there a way to fix that? Currently, I've uploaded it as a PNG instead. Ed [talk] [OMT] 18:32, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

I put the SVG through Inkscape to clean it up and then successfully uploaded it as File:Total alcohol consumption per capita - litres of pure alcohol - 2015.svg. Not sure if the Inkscape cleanup was a necessary step or if this is a permissions issue or if something else is going on. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 19:17, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

Is it ok to use cc-by-sa-4.0 on currency

I have uploaded 2 files on commons that depicts 1941 British indian coin. Is it ok to use CC-BY-SA-4.0 cause it is in my collection and as COM:Currency stated "The second is that the photographer agrees to license it under a free licence" (I am the Photographer). On the other hand this coin is from 1941 and maybe applies Public Domain (I'm not sure).

Sorry, I don't know how to help them

Shortly before I came to the Commons, I accidentally saw the article about “學甲維基小鎮” on Fecebook while browsing the search results pages. The name 學甲維基小鎮, I translated it as "WikiSyuejia" and I also created this category: Category:Images from WikiSyuejia. As far as I know, Lki5168 and Linbobshow are a contributor to WikiSyuejia, especially the former, has written many articles for Syuejia's schools, settlements, and temples and he also has uploaded images to zhwiki (Chinese Wikipedia). But what is odd is that their images were transferred from zhwiki by other users, this shows they never came here (Commons Wikimedia) to upload. More interestingly, Lki5168 said he was busy, and the next moment he said he unfamiliar with Commons. It almost sounds like he is looking for a reason to refuse a good suggestion because he can find time from his busy schedule to learn Commons way and how to upload, like the Commons's interface and the upload steps. According to Wcam, the most pressing problem facing zhwiki is that they don't have extra manpower to help his images transfer to Commons (which it means we need to wait several months, even years) unless he learns to upload on his own. So, how can we help resolve this problem in a way that is good for zhwiki and good for Commons?--125.230.84.235 08:15, 13 August 2024 (UTC)

Maybe mw:Help:Extension:FileImporter? It seems that was how the files were transferred by the other users. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:36, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
The help desk is not a place to complain about the conduct of other users. Is there something you are trying to do on Commons with which you need help? You generally cannot make a volunteer do something they do not wish to do. - Jmabel ! talk 22:53, 13 August 2024 (UTC)

@Serhii1962: Hello, Well, that doesn't look related to Commons, so you should probably look for help on a help page directly on the site https://uk.wikisource.org. But in the history of the page you linked, we can note that the page was moved from the title Архів:ДАХмО/P-6193 to the title Архів:ДАХмО/P-6193 (I do not see the difference, but there must be a difference because the older title is indeed a redirection page to the other page.) Apparently, the links on the page were not adjusted accordingly. For example, if you take the first link and you modify it with the other page name, you get to the page Архів:ДАХмО/Р-6193/1 instead of getting to a currently non-existent page Архів:ДАХмО/Р-6193/1. You could also ask the question to the user Alexandrtovmach, who did the page move. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:32, 14 August 2024 (UTC)

Hello! I uploaded this file in mid 2023, and it was working fine until around three months ago, when it suddenly started to stop viewing for some reason. When I try to open the SVG file, it views normally; but when I try to view the PNG version, it doesn't open, and the following error appears:

If you are considering editing on the English-language Wikipedia, make sure to read their policy on disclosing conflicts of interest and especially en:Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. en-wiki is way stricter than Commons about this sort of thing, and if you make paid contributions without disclosure, en-wiki will almost certainly block your account. - Jmabel ! talk 02:30, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

Can I upload a 1926 newspaper ad?

I have an ad, clipped form a newspaper, for a circus that folded in 1926. Can I upload it? Darneke (talk) 23:01, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

Depends where the newspaper was published, but very likely. If it was published in the US, you're good. Otherwise, check Commons:Copyright rules by territory; you need the ad to be in the public domain both in the US and in the source country. (By the by, you might get more input from copyright-knowledgeable users if you post questions at Commons:Village pump/Copyright.) —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 03:39, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
@Darneke: If published anywhere in 1926, it is now public domain in the U.S., but if it is from some other country then, yes, you also need to make sure that it is public domain in its country of origin because, as CalendulaAsteraceae said, we require PD (or free-licensed, but this won't be) in both U.S. and country of origin. And I agree that if you have a similar question in the future, Commons:Village pump/Copyright is the best place to ask. - Jmabel ! talk 05:34, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

Unless it's free licensed, it cannot be used here on the Commons website. But you can ask your question on the Wikipedia website where you want to use it. For example on the English-language Wikipedia, you could ask at en:Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:21, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for answering. One of the photos were under Creative Commons license 4.0. Which If I remember correctly, were eligible for use. Nelshmy (talk) 13:12, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
@Nelshmy: If an item is explicitly offered under a free license issued by the copyright owner, then it's ok, but to be free a license "CC 4.0" must not be of the type "NC" (non commercial) or "ND" (no derivatives). If there is no free license, you could contact the copyright owner and ask if they would agree to offer a free license on one image. If they agree, they can either indicate explicitly the free license on one of their websites or social media accounts, or they can send an email to Wikimedia as explained in the page Commons:VRT. I found your draft on the English-language Wikipedia. The logo of the company looks like it might be considered too simple to be copyrightable, so it could be on Commons. See the page Commons:Threshold of originality. You may want to obtain more opinions about the logo by asking at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:00, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

@Greghenderson2006: , My issue with the kind of category you're building is that the usage suggests intent of bringing prominence to Henderson Family Tree members by exhibiting them and parallels your promotional behaviors on English Wikipedia. All these categories you've created for non-notable people such as yourself, your parents, your extended family members as category is foul of COM:NOTSOCIAL, because they're like LinkedIn profiles of non-notable people and per COM:HOST, while not censored, it should not be used as a family album. I am not sure if the technical template is prohibited. Courtesy ping @Star Mississippi:
Graywalls (talk) 23:06, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
I would think that it depends on where and how it's used. The template exists, so obviously it can be used. However, just because a tool is available, that does not mean that it can be used indiscriminately for anything. Posting your personal family tree on all those Commons pages seems a bit much, IMHO. It looks like using Commons as a genealogy project. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:36, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

Permission sent by email - how do I proceed?

Hello, everyone. I have been contributing to the Commons for 15 years now yet today was the first time I had the copyright owners send the permission template to the Commons via email. It seems that they preferred that to the license generator. I am not sure how to proceed now. May I upload the files? How do I link it to the permission? The {{subst:PP}} template says that the sender of the email (i.e. the copyright holder) is supposed to provide the URL of the uploaded Commons file in the email with the permission. In this case the permission was sent before the file was uploaded, which seemed logical to me at the time. Surtsicna (talk) 14:49, 22 August 2024 (UTC)

@Surtsicna: You may forward the permission (preferably with RFC822 full Internet headers) to the permissions-commons address with carbon copy to the copyright holder and the URL of the uploaded Commons file, and ask to be kept in the loop. If you don't know how, ask a local computer-savvy person.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:57, 22 August 2024 (UTC)

Inaccuracy in a map

Hello, I've been using Wikipedia for some time, however I only just created an account and I am very new with all the discussion pages. To get to the point, I was doing some research on local "Nike Missile Sites" (which have been retired for many years), I noticed a map that had swapped the labels of the launch and control sites for one specific missile site. I personally do not know how to go about editing this, or at least getting in contact with the owner/creator of this map. This is the map in question. The issue is with the missile site PI-92, the "L" site (launch) on the map is below the "C" site (control), this is supposed to be the other way around. This is also reflected when to go to the page this map is on, if you locate the "PI-92" section in the article, and click the coordinates where it shows the locations of the launch and control sites, you can see launch site is above the control site. Again, as I am new I don't really know how to go about editing this, if someone could point me towards a tutorial on how to go about changing it that would be much appreciated. ExploredReality (talk) 07:13, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

In Commons terms the file in question is File:Pittsburgh Defense Area.png.
@ExploredReality: Short version of the following: I'll take care of it.
Unfortunately, the uploader/auther was someone who got in trouble for sockpuppeting and hasn't been on Commons in over a decade. Also unfortunately, the image is a rather low-resolution PNG, not the easiest thing in the world to edit. Conversely, fortunately, the edit you want is simple.
Normally, I'd suggest you tag the file page with {{Fact disputed}} and explain what you think is wrong (that would have been the normal way for an experienced Commons user to start) but in this case the edit you want sounds straightforward enough that I'll do it myself. What I'll be doing is (a) download to my PC, (b) edit in GIMP, (c) re-upload. You wouldn't be allowed to do this yet, because you'd need to be at least at autopatroller level on Commons to be allowed to overwrite a file like that. (What you would be allowed to do is to put in a request at Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop for someone else to edit the map, or put in a request to overwrite it yourself at Commons:Overwriting existing files/Requests. Again: no need to do that in this case, I'll take care of it.)
But, welcome, and I hope you'll participate here and in a few months be to where you can actually do things like this yourself rather than just put in a request. - Jmabel ! talk 19:21, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
Should be fixed now; because of some caching/propagation issues, it may take a while to look correct on any browser that had recently shown the image. - Jmabel ! talk 19:30, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

May I upload this cut recording of "Der Dessauer Marsch" to the wikipedia page?

So, the recording was played in 1987(?) by the Joint Military Bands of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) likely at the 750th Anniversary of Berlin. I was wondering due to conflicting ideas of the country no longer existing, the march being over 200 years old by likely, and it being played by a military band in general. Recording if you are interested Squogg (talk) 19:49, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

You cannot upload it to Wikimedia Commons. While the march itself is old and out of copyright, the sound recording is not. That East Germany no longer exists does not mean that works from there are free of copyright, regular German copyright does apply. If you can find a recording of that march by an American military band (Army, Navy ...), Wikimedia Commons could most likely accept that as a public domain work of the US military. If you want the file for the English wikipedia as some sort of fair use work, you'd have to ask there. --Rosenzweig τ 20:07, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

I am new user how can I upoloading own logo The Rohingya National Union (RNU) (talk) 01:04, 18 August 2024 (UTC)

@The Rohingya National Union (RNU): This is a little tricky, on several fronts:
  1. Accounts are usually supposed to belong to individuals, not institutions. You might want to change your account name to a name or alias followed by "(Rohingya National Union)". It makes things work a lot better if a second person from the organization also wants an account.
  2. When you say "own logo" I assume you mean the logo of your organization, and I presume that is the organization based in the UK and registered at 441 High Street North, London E12. I ask because the UK has a particularly low threshold of originality so if you are UK-based, your logo is almost certainly copyrighted as well as trademarked. Also is the logo already online anywhere? I can't readily find it.
  3. While this is not intuitive, organizations do not always own the copyright of their own logos, because they never got the artist to formally transfer that right. I have no idea if this is the case for your group, but the permission we need has to come directly from whoever is the copyright-holder (or their authorized representative if it is an organization) and, in a case like this, must be emailed by that person to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. See COM:VRT for more details. To host the logo on Commons, we will specifically need a free license such as {{Cc-by-4.0}} and you will also presumably want to ad {{Trademarked}} when uploading.
  4. As I understand it, the same team at COM:VRT can also "verify" your Wikimedia account, confirming that it is indeed from someone at your organization. Again, this is typically done by sending email from an address at your organization's domain, confirming ownership of the account.
I hope that helps. If not, please feel free to ask followup questions. - Jmabel ! talk 05:08, 18 August 2024 (UTC)

@Kinsleyhk: I assume we are talking about either File:Thomas Hui To.png or File:Thomas Hui.png (please provide a link like that when talking about a specific file). The two images appear to be identical. The former was deleted at your own request as a mistaken upload. The second was deleted by User:Túrelio on the basis that "this is unlikely the uploader's own work and the there's no indication that it's be released by the original copyright holder under a license that Commons accepts." I'd have to say that I concur with him. This looks like a low-res version of a studio portrait by a professional photographer.

Image registration / Copyright inquiry

Hello, I would like to ask a few questions regarding image registration.

First of all, we are an advertising agency that handles advertising. We registered information on Wikipedia about a person who runs a fashion clothing brand, but when we tried to insert the image several times, the image kept getting deleted due to copyright issues.

The image itself was delivered directly by the person who created it, and we confirmed that it is free to use as much as we want because there is no copyright.

If we need documents for this, is there a separate form for documents that Wikipedia can accept and recognize? If so, what form it is, how can I check it, and what parts must be included?

I have continuously asked questions about this, but I have not received a clear answer. I would like you to provide a clear method and answer for this.

Also, we registered a person named 'Park Ki-pyo' on the Korean Wikipedia, and I would like to upload a translation of this as well.

We tried registering it several times by translating it into English, but we confirmed that it was not registered on the English Wikipedia, let alone the translation.

Please also tell me how to register the English translation for this part, and if there is a problem with the content, what part is the problem, how to fix it, and if there is any content that must be included or should not be included when uploading the English translation, please let me know.

I will send you a link to the Korean version of the Korean Wikipedia character 'Park Ki-pyo' that I registered in advance.

  • Hi Kac8505, please see COM:VRT for instructions on how to provide copyright permission to Commons. The photographer or copyright holder must license the photo using a free license and the permission can be provided to VRT. Unfortunately we cannot help you with the articles on Korean or English Wikipedia - you will have to refer to those Wikipedia projects individually for questions about articles. Hello everyone

I don't understand the copyright rules for uploading images here. Could someone explain it to me? Baginda 480 (talk) 12:14, 18 August 2024 (UTC)

@Baginda 480: its hard to know where to start, because we have to deal at times with the copyright laws of every language in the world, which as you can imagine is very complicated and there are many pages devoted to different aspects of that. So, the following will be just a brief summary. If you have a specific case in mind, someone can probably give a more specific answer:
  1. Because our servers are located in the United States, Commons must abide by U.S. copyright law.
  2. If a given work is either (a) unpublished and from outside the U.S. or (b) first published outside the U.S. without simultaneous publication in the U.S. (legally, publication within 30 days), then we also abide by the copyright laws of that "country of origin."
  3. Every file on Commons must be either in the public domain (free from copyright) or free-licensed both in the U.S. and in its country of origin.
    • Files may be free from copyright for any of a number of reasons, and laws vary from country to country. For example, in most countries of the European Union, and many others, a photo loses copyright 70 years after the death of the photographer (more precisely, at the start of the next calendar year after that); in the U.S., that is different, and more complicated, but typically a photo loses copyright 95 years after first publication. Copyrights are typically inherited upon death; in some countries, including the U.S., they may also be transferred by written contract even within the life of the initial copyright-holder.
    • For our purposes, a "free" license means (a) anyone can use it as long as they conform to the license terms, including commercially (e.g. on a postcard, or in a book for sale) and (b) derivative works are permitted. Typical free licenses are {{Cc-by-4.0}} and {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}. Only the copyright-holder can grant this license.
    • It is fine for the rationale for being free of copyright to be different in the country of origin than it is in the U.S. For example, we could have an image that is old enough that its copyright has lapsed in a country of origin with a relatively short term of copyright, and too simple to be copyrighted in the U.S.
If you have a specific question that isn't answered there, please ask it. Jmabel ! talk 16:38, 18 August 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for the detailed explanation about the copyright rules. I have a specific case I need help with. Recently, an image I uploaded, titled "File:Mahathir Mohamad and Siti Hasmah.jpg," was proposed for deletion due to copyright concerns.
Based on the rules you provided, could someone explain what specific steps I need to take to ensure this image complies with Commons' copyright requirements? Here is the information I have about the image:
  1. The image was originally posted on Flickr with version 1.0 of the Creative Commons Public Domain Mark.
  2. I need to provide a specific reason why this image is in the public domain.
Could someone guide me on how to address these points correctly to avoid deletion?
Thank you for your assistance! Baginda 480 (talk) 17:04, 18 August 2024 (UTC)
The 1950s and earlier photos are OK. The 1960s one might still be copyrighted in the US. The 1976 and 1982 photos will probably need to be deleted since the Flickr uploader doesn't seem like the photographer to me and those are not public domain photos. Abzeronow (talk) 17:51, 18 August 2024 (UTC)

Clarifying Abzeronow's "the Flickr uploader doesn't seem like the photographer" he is saying that the Flickr account in question is one that we don't consider reliable for its own copyright determinations, so we are basically on our own for these. Either we can determine a PD rationale on our own, or we can't (and in the latter case we can't keep them, though we might be able to mark some of these for undeletion at a specific future date). - Jmabel ! talk 02:46, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
@Abzeronow, why would you say these would not have had their U.S. rights restored by the URAA in 1996? Also, are you presuming some particular publication date? I can see a lot of different scenarios related to that publication date. I'm not sure any of these are actually OK for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 02:50, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
COM:Malaysia has a section on the previous copyright law, which states "Because the 1987 extension was not retroactive, works made by authors who died before 1962 are in the public domain in both Malaysia and the US according to URAA, as well as anonymous, cinematographic, photographic, sound recording, broadcast, or corporate works published prior to 1962." The 1950s photographs look like they're prints and I had thought they would have been published before 1962. Abzeronow (talk) 15:36, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

@Jmabel: I would like to remind you that you overlook a key point. If you take a closer look, there is a link named "法的事項" (Legal Matters) at the bottom of that page, which links to the standard GJSTU-2.0 permission page. Based on that the files are licensed under {{GJSTU-2.0}} and therefore permissible on Commons. Remember it is perfectly fine to assert copyright while licensing your work under a free license.
Also notify @Baginda 480: .廣九直通車 (talk) 08:03, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
@廣九直通車: I didn't say they were not free-licensed. Not reading Japanese, I asked why Baginda 480 thought they were free-licensed (since the above remarks had given no indication). If it is as simple as what you just said then, fine, use the license overtly granted. - Jmabel ! talk 17:28, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

Images

About a year ago, I was interested in uploading images used on the https://fkzeljeznicar.ba/ webpage. I got in contact with the main author of the page and he confirmed that the content can freely be used. I explicitly asked about Wikipedia/media. However, experienced Wikimedia users told me that I could not use the images as the football club/author did not publicly confirm this on the webpage. Recently however, I believe that this information has been uploaded at the very bottom of the page. Basically, it says that "Documents, data and information published on the fkzeljeznicar.ba domain can only be used for the individual needs of the user... All content published on the fkzeljeznicar.ba domain can be transferred with the obligatory indication of the source, author and link." If I am not mistaken, and please do correct me if I am wrong, I believe that the images can be redistributed on, among other sites, Wikipedia? My rationale is that images are visual content. I am aware that an exact license by the author has not been mentioned, but even so I do hope that the last line of the text is enough of a public approval by the author. Bakir123 (talk) 20:40, 18 August 2024 (UTC)

Unless I am very mistaken, "se mogu koristiti samo za individualne potrebe korisnika" means it's OK to do things like print yourself a copy, but it is absolutely not a license for (1) commercial use and (2) publishing derivative works, both of which are required by COM:L. - Jmabel ! talk 02:54, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
I suppose that is true, but I myself am still not too sure due to the last sentence saying that all the content can be transferred. What do they specifically mean by transfer then? My understanding was that the content can be transferred to other sites such as Wikimedia for instance. Also, they say that documents, data and information can be used solely for personal use. Images can't be classified as documents as the two are different types of digital media. Neither are they data or information unless I am making a mistake. On the other hand, they are content. So the only problem here is what exactly do they mean by transfer. Bakir123 (talk) 08:08, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
It doesn't matter. Nothing here amounts to a sufficiently free license for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 03:57, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

Uploading photos of artwork and architecture of a recently dead relative

Can I upload photographs of monuments, buildings, houses and sculptures of work my father designed and produced between 1960 and 2010? The pictures were taken by him or myself. The old black and White pictures where scanned by myself. Some are part of 2 books that were printed in the last 15 years; one about his sculpture work and the other about his architecture production. He died last week and we need these images to illustrate his Wikipedia profile, that is being written by a third party. I guess I'm the copyright-holder of the pictures I took. What about the pictures he took and I scanned? Juan Lorenzo Barragán (talk) 00:29, 21 August 2024 (UTC)

@Juan Lorenzo Barragán: If you are the heir to his intellectual property, this is OK. The relevant form of license wherever it is his work rather than your own is (for example) {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} rather than {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}. If it is your photo of his copyrighted three-dimensional work, you might want to use {{Art Photo}} which lets you distinguish the artwork license (e.g. {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}) from the photo license (e.g. {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}.
If the photos in question are already online elsewhere, you'll need to go through COM:VRT. You'll definitely need to do that for the ones in a book. - Jmabel ! talk 03:31, 21 August 2024 (UTC)

File source is not properly indicated: File:Fraternitas lettonia zirkel and shield.png

User talk:Vladusty

These logos were created by me based on the visual elements and information available on the official website of Fraternitas Selonija / Fraternitas Lettonia. The design is my original work but reflects the imagery associated with these organizations as publicly displayed on their respective websites.

(https://www.selonija.lv/ and https://lettonia.lv/).

How should I indicate the source properly in this situation? Vladusty (talk) 16:23, 21 August 2024 (UTC)

Convenience links File:Fraternitas Selonijas vairogs un cirķelis.png, File:Fraternitas lettonia zirkel and shield.png. - Jmabel ! talk 17:53, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
@Vladusty: The shields on the left are below the threshold of originality in pretty much any country, so it would be all about those symbols on the right. When do those symbols originally date from? Also, if they are more "in the style of" than faithful copies, why do you believe they are in scope? - Jmabel ! talk 17:58, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
The symbols on the right are Zirkels
Zirkel is a monogram used in European student societies in countries such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia (Studentenverbindungen).
en:Zirkel (Studentenverbindung)
These Zirkel symbols were made in 1880 (for "Selonija") and in 1882 (for "Lettonia").
I believe that these symbols don't have copyright and they can be freely used in Wikipedia. Vladusty (talk) 18:36, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
@Εὐθυμένης: can you untag them? Enhancing999 (talk) 19:12, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
@Enhancing999: I just untagged both of the files in question. At the same time, I also pointed out the possibility of using the VRT process to the user. However, I'm still a bit unsure if he's linked or not to the two organizations, in which case, if he's not that is, there wasn't really any point for me to mention that. 😕 🏺ⲈⲨⲐⲨⲘⲈⲚⲎⲊ🏛️ ⲱⲑⲏⲥⲁⲧⲉ 19:31, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
If it's a mix of things that old (1880s) and things that are below the threshold of originality, then there is certainly no copyright issue. I am not making any judgement either way on a scope issue. - Jmabel ! talk 22:50, 21 August 2024 (UTC)

We will be distributing free powerpoint materials and some of the photos we used on the powerpoint are from wikimedia, is it okay not to cite them? 49.149.69.72 06:30, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
Wikimedia Commons just hosts content; it's not the copyright holder of such content. Moreover, from a copyright standpoint, public domain content is by definition content that is either no longer or was never eligible for copyright protection; so, there's no copyright to infringe upon. However, there might be other non-copyright related concerns in place that could possibly affect your reuse of the content; so, you probably should check your company's in-house policy (assuming you're working for a company) regarding such things or ask someone specializing in intellectual property/trademark law for input if you really want to be sure. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:24, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
And if you are skimping on credits, be very sure to stick to public domain. If you use copyrighted material that is under a CC license such as CC-BY-SA without crediting it, that is exactly as if you had used any other copyrighted material without licensing it. - Jmabel ! talk 17:54, 22 August 2024 (UTC)

SVG translate issue

I added the zh-hant translation of File:Myanmar civil war.svg on January, however after months of edits, the translation became wildly off, with some village names such as "曼通" and "代莫索" being repeated several times. However, it is currently not possible to edit the file using the svg translation tool, as it states that "This file contains a switch element that contains an element that is not a text element". What license to use

I've found an image here [9] which I want to upload, it says it can be used, shared, copied and distributed free of charge, for credit. I've never uploaded an image before is that image ok to upload and what license would it come under? Thanks Spiderpig662 (talk) 15:56, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

@Spiderpig662: sure looks old enough that I'd expect that is in the public domain. Do they not give any information about its provenance? - Jmabel ! talk 19:41, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: it says it was taken in 1886/1887 in Bergen. --Spiderpig662 (talk) 20:25, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
@Spiderpig662: Almost certainly PD, though there are weird edge cases. Is the photographer known (and is their death date known)? Do we have a known first date of publication? - Jmabel ! talk 20:36, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: The photographer isn't known and I'm not sure of first date of publication. --Spiderpig662 (talk) 21:03, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
@Spiderpig662: The Norway side is easy, because publication date doesn't matter: {{PD-anon-70}}.
The U.S. side is tricky. Mercifully, URAA shouldn't come into play, because it was already PD in Norway in 1996.
  • If it was first published anywhere before 1929, it's {{PD-US-expired}}.
  • If it was first published outside the U.S. 1929 through 28 February 1989 inclusive, and didn't conform to U.S. formalities, it's {{PD-1996}}, and if that was 1929-1964 it would have to have conformed to U.S. formalities including copyright renewal (very unlikely), so it would also almost certainly be {{PD-1996}}.
  • Also, if it was first published 2003 or later, then {{PD-old-70}} covers the U.S.
So the ugly cases are:
  • first published (anywhere) 1929 - 28 February 1989 and conformed to U.S. formalities (that would give it 95 years in the U.S. from publication date)
  • first published (anywhere) 1 March 1989 through 2002 (that would give it 95 years in the U.S. from publication date)
I'd consider that first ugly case very unlikely, so if this was first published on or before 28 February 1989, or on or after 1 January 2003, you should be good on one or another basis. Sadly, if it was first published in that ~14-year window, it will be copyrighted in the U.S. for a long time.
Yeah, it's very weird and very convoluted because we lack publication info. You might want to take this to Commons:Village pump/Copyright and see if someone more expert has thoughts; if you do, make sure either to copy-paste my analysis or to use a permalink and link this thread as the start of your discussion. - Jmabel ! talk 21:39, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

"Share Alike"

When the image I use is under the "Share Alike" clause, "If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same or compatible license as the original", am I expected to add the image to Wikimedia Commons? I have done so in the past but y'all appear to have removed it. I don't mind that you did; I just want to be in compliance with the rules. Tkthrasher (talk) 22:06, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

@Tkthrasher: The share-alike clause means that if you publish your work somewhere, then you must offer it under the same or compatible license as the original. It does not force you to upload it anywhere in particular, or even to publish it at all. So, no, you are not expected to upload your work to Commons unless you want to and you think it is in scope for Commons. The account Tkthrasher never uploaded anything to Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:32, 24 August 2024 (UTC)
Also, "share-alike" applies only to what derives from that particular image (or other work). If (for example) you retouch an image and use it in a book, your retouched image must offer the same "viral" license, but the book does not need to. - Jmabel ! talk 17:01, 24 August 2024 (UTC)

NoFoP-Morocco

Hello,

these photos were deleted on the grounds that Morocco does not have the freedom to take photos of buildings on public streets (NoFoP), but I would like to understand the following, please:

- Can I re-upload the photos and change the type of license (Commercial license)? Or is it forbidden?

- If it is forbidden, why don't you delete thousands of photos of Moroccan buildings on public streets on Wikimedia Common?

Thank you Mounir Neddi (talk) 00:40, 24 August 2024 (UTC)

We don't host images that cannot be used commercially (and it is not up to you to choose licence on works of others). Some do slip through, but they are deleted when found.
However, for the copyright law of Morocco to require permission from the architect, the architecture must be the main subject of the photo (which is not the case in many cityscape photos) and it must be special enough to be considered a "work" under copyright law. (Similarly with signs etc.)

Batch upload limits with OpenRefine

Using partliemntarch and freely available data, I have created over 1388 .svg files representing municipal chambers of medium and major cities Brazilian (more than 100k citizens) for 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020 elections. I wish to upload them to Commons so they may be used on articles onn portuguese Wikipedia about for their respective elections (example use in an article). I have experimented with using the OpenRefine tool to perform the batch upload of the images (see sample upload here). My questions are:

  • is there a rate limit to the rate of files I can upload at a time? If so, would OpenRefine take this rate into account or should I separate the files in smaller batches myself?
  • to perform this upload would I need a bot account or can it be done from my regular user account?

Proper licensing

Hello, I would like to upload photos of an event as an organization. We had a photographer release the photos stating all rights belong to us, but he would like to be credited as the photographer. What is the proper way to upload those on commons? He does not have a wiki account, and would not like to create one. He also does not have a publicly available website with a license.

Example: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SloFluffCon_2024_mayor_visit.jpg

I am almost certain this is wrong, since I uploaded as my own work - although he is credited in the EXIF. Excav (talk) 17:37, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

@Excav: Hi,
This should be done through COM:VRT. Either by the photographer, or by you with the documents showing that the copyright was transferred to you. Yann (talk) 18:01, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
@Yann Thanks. Is there a way to sort out a release for all photos of future events as well? We do not want to bother the photographer(s) for a release for each individual image. What would you suggest here?
The photographer is a volunteer at our non-profit - if that helps speed it up?
Also - if I upload them from my own account (Excav), I can't figure out where to attribute the original photographer. Excav (talk) 18:15, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
@Excav: It doesn't matter who is the photographer. Copyright doesn't change whether the photographer is paid, or is a volunteer. But yes, a general release permission can be done. VRT people will explain to you what kind of documents are required in this case. Yann (talk) 18:42, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
@Excav: Photographer is "author". I've edited File:SloFluffCon 2024 mayor visit.jpg per what you say above. Feel free to edit anything I didn't quite get accurate. VRT is, indeed, still needed. The trickiest piece is going to be documenting just what materials he assigned copyright for, and to whom. I suspect the photographer is likely to need to be in the loop on the email to the VRT.
This looks like a trickier one than usual, but if you get all the relevant parties cc'd on an email to the VRT, it should work out. Do remember to follow the instructions given in Template:PP once the initial email is sent to VRT.
If anything in COM:VRT isn't clear, the place to take it up is Commons:Volunteer Response Team/Noticeboard. - Jmabel ! talk 20:21, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

Help needed with 1900-images

Hello! I create a Wiki-version of an encyclopaedia based on a book I transcribed and the images for which I scanned from an original copy of the book. Due to the scope of the image requirements (ca. 1900 images, 983.5 MB) I need some help concerning questions about meta data, categorization, file naming, and the upload process, as well. I put together (hopefully) all relevant information on my user page (User:CalRis25) and marked open questions in red. I tried to answer as many questions as possible based on the Help-pages, but could use some help with the rest. Due to the large number of images every error would propagate 1900 times. I would like to avoid that. You can answer here or on the Talk-page of my user page. Thank you in advance for your help. CalRis25 (talk) 12:47, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

I am sorry that nobody seems to have answered. There are some tools that you might want to use, and people experienced with such tasks – it seems they don't read this page. You may have better luck at Commons:Village Pump. You could also take a look at Commons:Guide to batch uploading for some instructions. You might want to start by uploading a few images and ask for comments on them, to have a better chance to get everything right for the mass upload. –LPfi (talk) 09:26, 24 August 2024 (UTC)
Thank you, LPfi, for your answer. I am currently reading up about OpenRefine, which seems to be the right tool for this job. I will do as you suggest, and make a sample image-upload and ask for comments. Bye. CalRis25 (talk) 08:04, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

Nudity policy

Not sure if this is the right place for this question but I’ll see. I was looking through images of nudists and have a question. A few of these (I can link examples if they are needed) include children. I am not prudish when it comes to nudity and know Wikimedia can include this type of content but it feels iffy when it comes to children. None of what I’ve seen seems to meet US law’s definition of harmful media though which requires for example “lascivious exhibition of the anus, genitals, or pubic area of any person;”. Should I propose these for deletion? Has this topic been addressed before? Clyde Jimpson of the Arkansas String Beans (talk) 02:02, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

@Clyde Jimpson of the Arkansas String Beans: If you believe the material in question actually could raise legal issues in the U.S., then do not link it here, which is liable to draw in more viewers before it can be removed. Instead, e-mail legal-reports@wikimedia.org. - Jmabel ! talk 04:46, 25 August 2024 (UTC)
I did see that on the policy page I read about deletions. Makes sense. I don’t know if it actually is a violation though. Doesn’t seem like it really. I’m not legal expert so thought I’d ask. Clyde Jimpson of the Arkansas String Beans (talk) 07:17, 25 August 2024 (UTC)
@Clyde Jimpson of the Arkansas String Beans: Bear in mind that many people have strong views on the topics of nudity and sexuality. Therefore, it is almost certain that an image you have doubts about has already been scrutinised. However, if such an image was recently uploaded, uploaded by a new account or a single-topic account, if it is not categorised in the relevant categories, if the name of the image and its description do not indicate the content, then it is likely that it has slipped through the checks so far, and then you should report it to the above email address. Flag of Santa Rosa, CA

Hello. I am trying to upload an SVG version of the Flag of Santa Rosa, California. I remastered it on Inkscape on Aug 24, 2024. I'm wondering what copyright categories I should place it in before I upload it.

Cheers, Yeetstuff (talk) 06:12, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

  • I'm not completely sure I understand your question (we don't usually talk about "copyright categories"), but you'll need to tag it with {{PD-CAGov}} for the design. Insofar as your own work is copyrightable, you can choose any acceptable free license; the most common are {{Cc-zero}}, {{Cc-by-4.0}}, and {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}. These are quite different from one another, and licensing is irrevocable, so if you are not already familiar with these licenses you should familiarize yourself before choosing. - Jmabel ! talk 16:55, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

How to categorize a video where the videographer makes a full turn during the recording?

I made this selfie video some years ago. Apart from the wrong name (actually mirrors at four walls, not three), I deem it appropriate to have it in a category where the "one full turn during video" character is accounted for. There are some categories with "360 degrees" in the name, but they seem all to be for panoramic views, meaning the seen image already covers the full 360 degrees from left to right border. The current image is tagged {{Licensed-TOO|{{TOO-SK}}|{{PD-textlogo}}. The new version seems to involve less creative design than the current one. Why would we need a licence? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:13, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: I don't think so, due to the manual kerning. Pinging @Fetx2002 as uploader. We don't even have a current "Samsung Electronics logo (english)" to reference (or do we?).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:44, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

I am attempting to uplaod three images to Wikicommons and it will not allow me to due to "one error" but I do not see any place on the form where it lets me know where exactly the error has occured. Unsure how to proceed. Gavingaebe (talk) 18:06, 21 August 2024 (UTC)

Pinging @Sannita (WMF) because this sounds like there is a UI problem in the Upload Wizard. (I believe Sannita is on vacation, though, so I wouldn't expect a rapid response here).
@Gavingaebe: I see you did some uploads successfully after this, so I'm guessing you worked it out. What was the problem, so the dev team can have a chance to fix the notification? - Jmabel ! talk 22:55, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
I decided to upload only one image of the object I photographed instead of 3 and that seems to have "fixed" the issue so i'm not sure what the error actually was. Haven't encountered it since. Thanks! Gavingaebe (talk) 21:38, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
@Gavingaebe @Jmabel Hi, I'm back from vacation, and I'm slowly getting to answer notifications. It seems that the problem is still present, I know I got a Phabricator ticket about it just today, and I'll try to get the team to it as soon as possible. Thanks anyway for letting me know! Are cropped images made from non-free images always considered non-free?

When the original image is non-free, does the cropped image qualify as the non-free image even if the cropped image alone can be considered public domain? Also, if I extract the logo from the non-free PDF file, does it always considered the non-free image? Momiji-Penguin (talk) 05:22, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Momiji-Penguin (talk) 05:36, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

@Momiji-Penguin: Hi, and welcome. The answers to both are no, so please be more specific. What crops and licensing are you considering, and why?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:29, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for answering. Specific examples would be cropping a logo from this SVG image (File:Izutsuyatsuhashihonpo logo.svg), or extracting a logo from this PDF file (File:Sword Art Online anime flat logo.svg). Initially, I thought these logos could be licensed under {{PD-textlogo}}. But on second thought, I thought that since these sources are non-free, it's possible that these logos are non-free as well. Are there any image on wikimedia subject to copyright?is Every image on wikimedia under CC0 license?

As the title says, I would like to know if there is an image on wikipedia that is not under cc0 license or has some sort of restriction? 150.249.195.211 09:17, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

A majority of the content here is protected by copyright. See COMM:LICENSE for various acceptable licenses. —Justin (koavf)TCM 11:09, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
To be clear, "Wikimedia" generally refers to the Wikimedia Foundation or the broader Wikimedia movement, "Wikipedia" is a collection of 300+ encyclopedias written in many languages, "MediaWiki" is the software that is used on these wikis, "wikis" are collecctions of interlinked documents that can be edited by several users, and this site is "Wikimedia Commons", which is one of the 800+ wikis that are built by various Wikimedians and whose hosting and trademarks are controlled by the Wikimedia Foundation. —Justin (koavf)TCM 11:11, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
The short answer is "no". Assuming you are talking about Wikimedia Commons, the licensing status of each image is indicated on the respective file page.
Everything here should be either free-licensed or in the public domain both in its "home" country and in the U.S. Some of what is here on a pure "public domain" basis might still be in copyright in some other country, so be careful if you are not either in the U.S. or in the country of origin for the file. "Free licenses" vary a great deal. CC-0 is by no means the most common. A lot more common are CC-BY and CC-BY-SA licenses, which require you to give an attribution, usually to the photographer in question. If you have a specific file where you are trying to understand the licensing, feel free to ask. - Jmabel ! talk 22:56, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

Photos of Hussein Onn

File:Tun Hussein Onn potrait.jpg

Since we can't be certain if his photo is from before 1963 or possibly after, and whether it can be freely used without copyright restrictions, do you think we should consider removing it? Baginda 480 (talk) 16:01, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

FWIW, Hussein Onn in en-wiki describes this photo as "Official Potrait [sic] 1973". That edit was made by User:Shahril4487, who has very few edits, all on en-wiki and all within less than 20 minutes on one day, so probably a throwaway account. - Jmabel ! talk 23:49, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

Downloading an Image on

Can I download an image from Wikimedia commons and use it on my website if it has the following rights under its description? and if I put the attribute in the description section of the image does that mean am okay to use it?

You are free: to share – to copy, distribute and transmit the work to remix – to adapt the work Under the following conditions:attribution – You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use. share alike – If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same or compatible license as the original. Js Trent (talk) 12:00, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

@Js Trent There is a link "Cite this page" in the left hand menu item. My experience is that choosing the style you wish from the list with opens on the page for the file you wish to use is perfectly sufficient. Others may give you additional advice.
An example is File:Tun Hussein Onn potrait.jpg where the "cite" link opens thus 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 14:23, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
@Js Trent and Timtrent: actually, that is not a correct answer. That is how to cite the page in a bibliography, not how to attribute it when reusing.
Different images have different licenses, and so the requirements differ. Js Trent, it sounds like you are describing a CC-BY-SA license of some sort.
  • You must link to the specific license (which would mean having a specific version number for the license, which I can't even guess from what you wrote here). Online, that should certainly be a live link to a URL.
  • You must give "appropriate credit". If the file page specifies a particular attribution use, that. Otherwise, it will typically be something like "Wikimedia Commons user such-and-such". If you say what file you are talking about I can give you a specific answer.
I could be much more specific if you would say exactly what file you are talking about, rather than just quote part of the license summary. - Jmabel ! talk 19:08, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel I'm grateful for the correction. It seems counter-intuitive, though, that the cite link does not do the job one might expect it to. Perhaps Commons needs a menu link to "Create Attribution"? 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 22:26, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
@Timtrent: That would be the "Use this file" link. Yes, it would be much clearer if they were near one another; not under my control. - Jmabel ! talk 22:34, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel Thank you. Took me ages to find that link, hiding in plain sight! The wording of that link is not exactly obvious, until, of course, it is.

An image of a BART train during the last run event on 20 April 2024

I uploaded the image on Wikimedia Commons a few days after the event on April 20. However, I found a lot of similarities of this image, such as different people posting this on X. I also posted this image, which is the same as the image on Wikimedia Commons. Both versions were taken by me.

In the meantime, I searched this image on Google Lens and the classic Google Image search. None of the images from Commons came up on these searches like the one on the right. This image was uploaded as CC0, and the other image is CC-BY-SA 4.0. When I searched "legacy BART trains" or the BART train last run event, I did not find any images of that kind on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons; it shows images taken from other people on social media platforms and YouTube.

After searching BART trains filtered from images from Commons in Google Images, a few images from 2023 or later showed up. Unfortunately, some images do not have a "licensable" tag, and some images contained the text "Images may be subject to copyright." Images of BART trains taken after April 2024 in Wikimedia Commons were not shown when I searched Google Images of it. I don't know why some images from Wikimedia Commons did not show up on Google Lens or Google Image search. Evan0512 (talk) 19:13, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

I mean about specific images on Wikimedia Commons that found no results of matching images on Google Images and Google Lens, like TinEye. I requested help because I was shocked when I tried to search Google about this image as seen above, which showed little or no results for Wikimedia but similar images elsewhere. When I click Google Lens tab of a specific image on Commons, it results in a low-resolution image displayed on Google Lens. Evan0512 (talk) 06:19, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

Upload an image of 1938

Hello :) .

I would like to upload to Commons an image of a Cuban film from 1938. I downloaded the image from a website. I think it should be ok to upload it due to Cuban copyright laws, but I want to be sure before I do it.

Thanks in advance. Nonickillo (talk) 18:36, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

Do you know when all of the principal creators of the film died? It could still be in copyright. Cuba is 50 PMA. Abzeronow (talk) 18:46, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
It seems that the director of the film died in 1992. But about the photographers I have no information. Nonickillo (talk) 18:58, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
Then this film can only be uploaded here in 2043. You could see if your local Wikipedia would accept non-free media if you plan on using the image for an article. Abzeronow (talk) 19:10, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

Why can't I replace a painting with a better version of it?

I want to use this versionː https://www.flickr.com/photos/magika2000/5870187312

to replace this versionː File:Saint-Philipe at Sole Bay mg 0505.jpg

For some reason commons doesn't accept that. DavidDijkgraaf (talk) 12:32, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

To overwrite files, you'd need to be an autopatroller or above. Your proposed version is visually different enough that it should be uploaded as a new file (but the Flickr copyfraud of "all rights reserved" might make upload difficult). Abzeronow (talk) 17:53, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
Not really difficult. The source of a PD image is irrelevant to our ability to accept it, though of course it should be documented.
Download to your computer, upload to Commons. Indicate the source, but ignore the copyfraud and just give an accurate PD license. - Jmabel ! talk 19:25, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
Especially with artworks we shouldn't replace images, but always upload as a new version. 1. The source of the image is different, but the description is not changed when replacing. So we are actually falsifying data by replacing. 2. The older version from an older source might also be an older version of the artwork. Older in the sense of before a possible restoration. Again by replacing we would not only be falsifying the description, but also destroying actual information.
What is the hassle of just uploading a new image? None really.
You can also replace your new image where the other image has been used before.
If there is a wikidata-item for the artwork, you could just replace the image in wikidata. This way your "better" image will automatically be reused interwikiwise. Wuselig (talk) 20:56, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
@DavidDijkgraaf: Please upload the full-resolution (2133 × 1268) version of the file. --Geohakkeri (talk) 18:13, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

Removing Old Photos

Good morning

Can you tell me how old photos can be removed from WikiCommons? CQuick (talk) 02:00, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

Typically, someone who uploads a piece of media can ask for it to be deleted with no more justification within a brief period of time. If a piece of media has been here for a long time, there will have to be some kind of reason why they should be deleted. —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:16, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
Generally there needs to be a reason for it to be deleted. Commons:Deletion policy. If you are thinking of any type of old photos in particular, you might get a more detailed answer if you specify. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 02:19, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

@CQuick: my first gut is "absolutely not". This is a photo archive that is at least partly in service of an encyclopedia. Hi, I'm researching Karl Maria Wiligut, and I noticed that the photo of him on his Wikipedia page, and in Wikipedia Commons is actually of Himmler, and not Wiligut. Please make this file above only of the oval photo and leave in the name under it and the "Leeds and Yorkshire" reference - the surrounding writing/text should all go (be edited out, which I have tried to do, but FAILED).

The photo needs to be titled: Mr Robert Carrington Middleton (1875-1916)

Thanks Srbernadette (talk) 10:49, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

@Srbernadette: For reference, asking help with cropping files is better done at COM:GL, but I think cropping files should be the least of your concerns at the moment. What makes you think File:Sgt. Robert Carrington Middleton (1875-1916) Leeds Special Constabulary.png has been released under a {{Cc-zero}}? How do you know that the "The person who associated a work with this deed has dedicated the work to the public domain by waiving all of their rights to the work worldwide under copyright law"? Your screenshot of the photo states the image's copyright is owned by the "British Library Board, All Right Reserved". That might not be correct, but it's a bit of a jump to go from that to "cc-zero". Your user talk page seems to indicate that you've had issues with previous files uploaded to Commons, and it appears that you might be back at it again. For example, you uploaded File:Anne Grosvenor, Baroness Ebury and her son Francis Grosvenor, 8th Earl of Wilton.webp as {{Cc-by-2.5}} but there's no indication the file has been released as such in the newspaper article, you've cited as the source. Why do you think that file is licensed as "cc-by-2.5"? Are you just randomly selecting licenses that you think might be OK? -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:40, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
I am so sorry, I thought that because this photo was in a UK newspaper from 1916 that all was OK...I honestly don't know what to do...I will stop editing for sure. Sorry again. Srbernadette (talk) 12:02, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
@Srbernadette: I didn't post what I did to try and get you to stop editing. A photo published in a 1916 British newspaper, despite the claim made by the en:British Library Board, almost certainly seems to be within the public domain under UK copyright law per COM:United Kingdom#Ordinary copyright; so, perhaps all that needs to be done is for the licensing to be tweaked. The other image is from 1933 and that one might be trickier to assess. The main concern is that you seem to be "guessing" when it comes to licensing when you apparently don't know what to do, and seem to have been guessing for quite some time now. Maybe instead of guessing in the future, it would be better for you to ask for help first at COM:VPC before uploading a file whose copyright status you're unsure about. Many COM:Creative Commons licenses are OK for Commons, but the copyright holder has to be the one to release their work as such; so, perhaps you shouldn't use such licenses except for 100% original photos you've taken yourself, not photos of other photos taken by others or scans from websites or print publications. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:29, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

Thanks and sorry to everyone. Thanks for your help with the CROPPING - IT WORKED!!!!
But I think it may be too big - can you please make it smaller a bit so that it looks a bit sharper?

@Srbernadette: Any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:07, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
Seems reasonable when thumbnailed (see right side). Personally, I'd crop label and outer border too.

Paste up grafitti

Would this picture be eligible for commons? The picture was taken in London and it seems that (based on what I've found on Google) that grafitti put up illegaly is not covered by copyright, but I want to be on the safe side, a number of grafitti images I've uploaded have been deleted for (apparently not counting as 'grafitti'). StarTrekker (talk) 20:47, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

@StarTrekker: COM:CB#Graffiti seems to agree with what you found on Google. In cases such as this, you might need to consider not only the copyright status of the graffiti itself, but also the photograph of it. The photo you linked to above seems to have been released under a license that's accepted by Commons; so, it would, in principle, seem to be OK to upload. One possible concern, however, could be images of en:Brian Jones and other woman (don't know who she is) appearing in the photo. These don't strike me as being graffiti per se, but a COM:DW of perhaps some other work (perhaps a photo like shown here and here) that might still be under copyright protection. It looks like these two elements were glued on top of the rest of the work. That could make things more complicated. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:16, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

Broken File: "File:Départements_et_régions_de_France_-_Noname-2016.svg"

The file File:Départements_et_régions_de_France_-_Noname-2016.svg is broken, in the sense that the file doesn't render (both Safari and Chrome, so likely not browser specific) on the file page or on wikipedia. When visiting https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7e/D%C3%A9partements_et_r%C3%A9gions_de_France_-_Noname-2016.svg, there is a parser error at the top of the page and a rendering of the page up to the first error. The specific parser error mentioned is "error on line 735 at column 35: Namespace prefix Inkscape for label on path is not defined". How can this be fixed? TheTrueShaman (talk) 00:35, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

@TheTrueShaman: Hi, and welcome. It works for me on Chrome Version 127.0.6533.101 (Official Build) (64-bit). Pinging @Hairy Dude, Otourly as uploaders.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:34, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: The file was fixed by Hairy Dude the day before you responded. Thanks for checking anyways! TheTrueShaman (talk) 03:23, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Discolored old photo

The original color of the old photo is black and white, but it can become discolored overtime due to some reasons. This discoloration often takes on a yellow. Speaking of which, I discovered that there are two problems:

  1. Where should files about the discolored old photo be categorized? Category:Yellow photographs?
  2. The discolored old photo are no longer black and white, then should we still be placing the category "Black and white" photographs?--125.230.82.39 19:24, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
For example, File:Chen Tian.png shows black and white, and File:Chen Xian-cha.jpg shows yellow.--125.230.82.39 19:28, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
Your second example is not discoloured by age, but sepia-toned. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:04, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Hello

Can everyone help me check if the image I just uploaded complies with copyright? This is my first time using a photo from that website. Baginda 480 (talk) 10:37, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

Hope everybody help me to reviewed the image Baginda 480 (talk) 10:39, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
@Baginda 480: Hello, You are not the German Federal Archive and you cannot use this source template. Please see the FAQ of the German Federal Archive: "May I upload pictures of the Federal Archives on Wikimedia Commons? No [...] It is explicitly prohibited for users to upload images from the Federal Archives." [12] -- Asclepias (talk) 12:37, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
@Asclepias: Thanks. I tagged it as a copyvio and Yann deleted it.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:27, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
Notwihthstanding the copyright status of the image in question, a FAQ on a web page does not override copyright law. The site in question hosts images from 1860 onwards, at least some of which are likely to now be in the public domain. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:00, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: Then the German Federal Archive can upload the PD ones using the appropriate source template and PD tags. No other Commons users are authorized.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:04, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
Since when do we need their - or anyone's - authorisation to upload PD works? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:55, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing Since we embarked on a cooperation project documented at Commons:Bundesarchiv and {{BArch-image}}, our largest donation.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:52, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
Please explain how that's binding on Wikipedia Wikimedia editors. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:16, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
@Asclepias: You brought it up.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:00, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
You, Jeff G., made the assertion that "[we need authorisation to upload PD works from the German Federal Archive] since we embarked on a cooperation project". Should we now regard that assertion as withdrawn? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:33, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: Not until I have heard back from Asclepias.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:09, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
In that case, the onus is on you, not Asclepias, to substantiate your claim. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:56, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
